One sub-plot in AYLI is the shepherdess Phoebe’s love for the lead character Rosalind.

For most of the play, Rosalind disguises herself as a young man, Ganymede.

A further twist is that in Shakespearean times, women were not permitted to act on stage; So Ganymede is a man playing a woman dressed as a man.

The amount of detail, and the message behind the love storied, are one of a kind, not featured in any other play except A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
